Hello and welcome to Sense and Sentimentality!

This website is a point-of-contact for people interested in work on historical horse-human relationships. My interest in the soldier-horse relationship had been ‘brewing’ for some time, but I started to explore it in my M.A., and then developed this with my PhD research into the soldier-horse relationship during The Great War. This has finally become a book: Soldiers and their Horses: Sense, Sentimentality and the Soldier-Horse Relationship in The Great War, Routledge, 2020. Exciting times!

I am now working on a new ‘baby’ that hopes to focus on the practical role of horses in British society in the late C19th and early C20th. I am particularly interested in horse-related services, activities, and infrastructure.
